Our School

Steve MacLean PS

We acknowledge that our learning is taking place on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory. We thank the Algonquin Nation for hosting us and recognize their enduring presence on this land.

Our School

Located in the area of Riverside South, Steve MacLean Public School opened its doors to welcome students on Tuesday, September 5, 2006. Our “official opening” was on December 4, 2006, when Canadian astronaut, Dr. Steve MacLean cut the ribbon to open “his” school and shared his recent flight experiences with our students. One of our students suggested the name “Steve MacLean Public School”, as Steve MacLean is a graduate of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and a strong advocate of literacy. His role as astronaut is an inspiration to all of our students. Our school is a large family where all staff and parents work collaboratively to support and enrich the lives of our children.

Our Students

Steve MacLean Public School staff members are a dedicated, caring and enthusiastic professional learning team. Our staff work collaboratively to create a challenging and nurturing environment for all of our children. They dedicate an incredible amount of time both to support academic achievement within and outside the classrooms.

Some comments from our parents:

  • “Steve MacLean Public School provides an anchor in our community where our children can feel safe to try new things, be themselves without fear of ridicule and have the safety to know it’s OK to fail as long as you tried and try again. It's a place they can socialize and become part of a larger community. It is a place where they can grow and can contribute to their community.”

  • “Steve MacLean Public School provides a wonderful balance between the academics, arts, sports and social opportunities. The wide range of extracurricular opportunities provided, enhance the school day and teach that life needs to have balance between fun and work.”

  • “The staff go above and beyond with the students making them feel safe and secure as they tackle the highs and lows that come along in grade school.”

Safe Schools Initiatives

Students have a right to learn in an environment which is stimulating yet safe and free from disruptions that interfere with learning. Steve MacLean Public School has a Code of Behaviour developed collaboratively by staff and parents. This is based on the importance of Respect, Responsibility, Relationships and Recognition. This Code of Behaviour reflects the values promoted in the OCDSB Community of Character wheel. Students are expected to respect others, make sound decisions and take positive actions to create and maintain a cooperative and caring learning environment. (This Code of Behaviour is in the student agendas and is available from the office.) Our School Resource Officer visits the school periodically in order to strengthen good community relationships and assists the school to resolve issues as necessary.
