Students
Our students – the Steve MacLean Public School Stars - have many opportunities to demonstrate their leadership skills. The grade seven and eight students are part of the Steve MacLean Public School Student Council. Our students also serve as referees, classroom helpers, reading buddies, P.A.L.S., and lunch monitors. They demonstrate leadership skills by taking care of our JK/SK students as they arrive and leave school on the bus. A number of our older students assist in kindergarten classrooms during the Nutrition Breaks to prepare activities.
Our students and school community organize a variety of fundraisers to support important causes (e.g., Walk for Cancer Research, Ottawa Food Bank, Philippines hurricane relief).
Staff
The Steve MacLean Public School staff members are “stars” as well, forming a dynamic and caring professional learning community. Our staff members actively participate in Board-wide professional development initiatives as well as school-based professional growth activities. Each and every member of the Steve MacLean Public School team works to provide the best possible care and support to our students. Their dedication and professionalism is recognized inpidually and in school newsletters, at assemblies, in morning announcements and by the positive comments and appreciation of our parent community.
Parents/Guardians/Volunteers
Our School Council is very active and is always supportive of our many school initiatives. Our parent community overwhelmingly participates in our hot lunch program which in turn generates funds for the purchase of library resources, technology (projectors, Smartboard, ladybugs) and covers the cost of bussing for many field trips. We are fortunate to be part of such an incredible community!
Community
Given our school name, we have a very good partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). Our school also partners with Ottawa Public Health, the City of Ottawa, the University of Ottawa, and many local small businesses and professionals in order to enhance our program delivery.
Our school partners with MASC to enrich the arts program delivery (e.g., dance, music, drama). Many different cultural acts are slated to perform for our students this year.
We recognize that this school is a hub in the community. As a result, we scheduled a variety of workshops for parents on topics such as Internet Safety (May), Mental Health (January), Mathematics and Critical Thinking (November) that are open to any interested parents in the Riverside South community.
On a yearly basis, our students find ways to give back to the community. Each year the students raise funds for Cancer Research and collect large quantities of food for the Ottawa Food Bank. Our students also participate in the National Capital Clean Up each year in order to beautify our neighbourhood.
