Our School

Located in the area of Riverside South, Steve MacLean Public School opened its doors to welcome students on Tuesday, September 5, 2006. Our “official opening” was on December 4, 2006, when Canadian astronaut, Dr. Steve MacLean cut the ribbon to open “his” school and shared his recent flight experiences with our students. One of our students suggested the name “Steve MacLean Public School”, as Steve MacLean is a graduate of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and a strong advocate of literacy. His role as astronaut is an inspiration to all of our students. Our school is a large family where all staff and parents work collaboratively to support and enrich the lives of our children.

Our Students

Steve MacLean Public School has an enrolment of about 960 students in Junior Kindergarten to grade eight with many of our children in the Early French Immersion Program. Steve MacLean Public School is a dual track school offering an English Program from junior kindergarten to grade eight and an Early French Immersion Program from senior kindergarten to grade eight. Our children are eager and energetic learners. They work hard and play hard. We often hear our children say with enthusiasm: “Steve MacLean is the best school ever!”

Our Staff

Steve MacLean Public School staff members are a dedicated, caring and enthusiastic professional learning team. Our teaching personnel work collaboratively to create a challenging and nurturing environment for all of our children. Both teaching and non-teaching staff dedicate an incredible amount of time both to support academic achievement within and outside the classrooms.

Our Community

Our parents are wonderfully supportive, always ready to assist in any way, whether fundraising to support our library acquisitions, volunteering to accompany students on field trips, reading with students and assisting in classrooms, or organizing Pizza Days and Special Events Days. Our School Council is composed of parents and two staff representatives. Our School Council is always there to work collaboratively with the school staff to support our students.

Some comments from our parents:

  • “Steve MacLean Public School provides an anchor in our community where our children can feel safe to try new things, be themselves without fear of ridicule and have the safety to know it’s OK to fail as long as you tried and try again. It's a place they can socialize and become part of a larger community. It is a place where they can grow and can contribute to their community.”

  • “Steve MacLean Public School provides a wonderful balance between the academics, arts, sports and social opportunities. The wide range of extracurricular opportunities provided, enhance the school day and teach that life needs to have balance between fun and work.”

  • “The staff go above and beyond with the students making them feel safe and secure as they tackle the highs and lows that come along in grade school.”

This Code of Behaviour reflects the values promoted in the OCDSB Community of Character wheel. Students are expected to respect others, make sound decisions and take positive actions to create and maintain a cooperative and caring learning environment.
